Canelo Alvarez has not had the best year in his professional career, with a record of 1-1 and losing to Terence Crawford in the undisputed super middleweight title fight.
However, he can feel relieved to be the second highest-paid athlete in the world, according to Forbes’ list of the World’s Highest-Earning Athletes for 2026.
The 35-year-old boxer is set to earn $170 million by 2025, with $160 million coming from match fees and another $10 million from off-ring activities, including sponsorships.
The figure is enough to rank second, just behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who topped the list for the fourth consecutive year with a total income of 300 million US dollars (around Rp5.3 trillion).
Canelo fought twice in 2025, an absolute victory over William Scull in May and a loss to Crawford in September.
He has not fought since undergoing elbow surgery, but will return to action on September 12, 2026 when he faces Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The only other boxer on the list is Jake Paul, who is ranked 23rd with total earnings of 70 million US dollars.
The 29-year-old also has a 1-1 record in 2025 with an absolute victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June and a KO loss to Anthony Joshua in December. Paul has been out since the defeat to Joshua due to a broken jaw and hopes to fight in early 2027.
Other football icons, Lionel Messi (140 million US dollars), Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James (137.8 million US dollars), and Dodgers all-rounder Shohei Ohtani (127.6 million US dollars) complete the top five on the Forbes list.
