JAKARTA – Youth badminton player Alwi Farhan managed to make a surprise by defeating the first seed and world number one, Shi Yuqi, to reach the quarterfinal of the 2026 BWF Super 750 Singapore Open.
Alwi fought through a three-game match for 75 minutes against the Chinese men’s singles and closed it with a final score of 21-16, 19-21, and 21-14 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Thursday, May 28, 2026, afternoon WIB.
“Of course, it’s happy, I’m also proud to get experience from the world’s first rank, but the journey is not enough because there are still important stages ahead. I still have to focus,” said Alwi in an official statement.
Alwi performed solidly in the duel with Shi Yuqi. He won the first game which was quite tight, gave a fierce fight in the second game, and managed to dominate most of the third game.
This victory is certainly very special for Alwi, a badminton player who climbed to the highest podium at the 2023 Junior World Championships. The reason is, this is the first clash between the two badminton players in the competitive arena.
“I won against Shi Yuqi, but the journey is still very long. I believe God always prepares a better plan for me. So, I have to accept everything with enough maturity,” said Alwi.
In the last eight, Alwi will meet Kodai Naraoka. The Japanese badminton player got a ticket to the quarter finals after overcoming the Chinese Taipei men’s singles, Lee Chia Hao.
Alwi is one of two Indonesian representatives who managed to reach the quarter-finals. The other representative is the men’s doubles Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, who stopped the pair of Daniel Lundgaard/Mads Vestergaard from Denmark.
Indonesia actually placed three representatives in the second round of the tournament. However, the pair of Sabar Karyaman Gutaman/Mohammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani had to pack their bags first.
