JAKARTA – One of Arsenal’s owners, Josh Kroenke, said extending Mikel Arteta’s contract is the club’s top priority.
Arteta’s three-year contract is due to expire in 2027. ESPN reported that both the Spaniard and the Gunners are keen for him to extend his stay for another six-and-a-half years.
“Keeping Mikel is the main priority. I think the good news for Arsenal supporters around the world is that he is enjoying this project.”
“He enjoys being here and since his playing days until now. He is a true Arsenal man,” Kroenke said ahead of the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Arteta said last month he was fully committed to the club, but talks over a new contract were put on hold until the summer.
“We don’t have time to discuss that now. Our full focus is on what we have to do from now until the end of the season,” Arteta said at the time.
Since that comment, Arteta has led Arsenal to their first English League title in 22 years. He will achieve a historic double if his team beats PSG in the summit match on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Budapest.
“If there is one person you can link to all this, I will give 100 percent credit to Mikel, his staff, and the players.”
“They are the ones. As Mikel sets our tactics, the players have to play, they have to win for you,” Kroenke said.
Arsenal spent more than £250m on eight new players last summer. Kroenke insists the club will not stop in their quest for more glory.
“We will try to strengthen the team because we know that the teams around us will get better. If you don’t try to keep improving and improving yourself, you just stay in place.”
“We think we have an opportunity here. We have a really strong foundation to continue to build on and try to defend.”
“Building a foundation is usually the hardest part of the journey. Now that we have it, it’s about trying to stay on top and realizing that everyone is trying to climb the mountain after you,” he said.
