JAKARTA – As football fans prepare for the 2026 World Cup, the jersey worn by one of the most iconic players in the sport will be auctioned.
The jersey number 10 belonging to the late Pele, which was worn in the 1958 World Cup final match, will be auctioned online between June 29 and July 16, 2026.
“This is the outfit worn by one of the greatest footballers in history on the night of his debut,” said Brahm Wachter, Head of Sotheby’s Modern Collection, in a statement on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, local time.
The jersey is the one worn by Pele in his first World Cup final. Edson Arantes do Nascimento – aka Pele – was 17 when he scored two goals in Brazil’s 5-2 victory against hosts Sweden at the Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm. He remains the youngest player to ever score in a World Cup final.
Pele, who died at the age of 82 in December 2022 due to colon cancer, presented the handmade jersey after the final to his roommate and teammate, Dida.
The jersey remained in Dida’s family for decades before being stored in a Brazilian museum and eventually acquired by its current owner, whose identity is kept secret, in 2004.
The estimated value of the jersey is 6 million US dollars or around Rp107.7 billion, which will make it the most valuable memorabilia ever sold from the only person to have won football’s biggest trophy three times.
The first goal of the Brazilian legend in the final was one of the best World Cup goals of all time, according to fans and players.
He controlled the ball with his chest, lofted it over a Swedish defender, and scored. The second goal came late in the game with a header.
Pele then won his third World Cup title in 1970 in Mexico, one of the three host countries of this year’s tournament along with the United States and Canada.
The Azteca Stadium – which was also the site of Brazil’s Pele-era World Cup victory – will host the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, with Mexico against South Africa.
Meanwhile, the auction period also includes a public exhibition starting on July 1, 2026 at Sotheby’s Breuer Building, New York.
