Chelsea legend and iconic forward Bobby Tambling has passed away at the age of 84, as reported by Sports. His former club, Crosshaven, announced the news regarding the prolific striker.
Tambling established himself as one of English football’s finest finishers, holding the Chelsea all-time goalscoring record for 47 years. He netted 202 goals in 370 appearances before Frank Lampard eventually surpassed his tally in 2013.
The striker made his senior debut for the Stamford Bridge club in 1959 at just 17 years old. He immediately impacted the team, scoring in a 3-2 victory over West Ham.
Following Jimmy Greaves’ departure to AC Milan in 1961, Tambling stepped up to deliver 22 goals in his first full campaign. Despite Chelsea suffering relegation that year, he remained loyal to the club.
Tambling captained the team the following season, scoring a stunning 37 goals to steer Chelsea back to promotion. He consistently reached double figures in league action every year from 1961 to 1969.
He played a pivotal role in securing the League Cup in 1965, famously scoring in the first leg of the final against Leicester. Chelsea won the match 3-2 and clung on for a goalless draw in the second leg to claim the trophy.
His remarkable feat of scoring five goals in a single match against Aston Villa in 1966 remains an unbroken Chelsea record. He also found the net in the 1967 FA Cup final, though Chelsea lost 2-1 to Tottenham.
By the time Chelsea claimed their maiden FA Cup crown in 1970, Tambling had slipped behind Peter Osgood and Ian Hutchinson in the pecking order. He left Stamford Bridge that same year, maintaining an ever-popular status due to his trademark humility.
Internationally, Tambling earned three caps for England, though he narrowly missed out on the 1966 World Cup squad. After his time with Chelsea, he spent three years at Crystal Palace.
He concluded his playing career in the Republic of Ireland, settling in Cork. He transitioned into management, leading local teams including Cork Celtic, Cork City, and Crosshaven. In recent years, Tambling had been living with dementia.
His longevity at the top of Chelsea’s scoring charts created a lasting bond with Frank Lampard. While Lampard needed 648 appearances to reach 211 goals, the comparison highlights Tambling’s superior goalscoring ratio as a forward.
“We have grown close over the last few years because I think we both realised this was a day that was going to come,” said Tambling regarding Lampard eclipsing his Chelsea goals tally.
“We always have a joke with each other, I say ‘come on Frank, rush along'. And my partner would always say ‘come on Frank, don't take any more penalties'.”
Crosshaven AFC released an official statement on X expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of their former manager and friend.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that Crosshaven AFC announce the passing of our dear friend and former manager, Bobby Tambling — a true Chelsea legend and an even more wonderful human being,” the statement read.
“His passion for football was absolutely infectious. Whether he was talking tactics, working on set pieces, or telling stories from his playing days (sometimes for the tenth time), you couldn't help but hang on every word,” the club added.
“Bobby leaves an enormous hole in all our lives. We are all better, kinder, and richer for having known him,” the announcement continued.
“His warmth, his wisdom, his humour and his love will stay with us forever. To his loving family, his close friends, and his adoring Chelsea family — we send our deepest, most heartfelt condolences,” the club stated.
“We have all lost a true legend, and a very special man,†the statement concluded.
