JAKARTA – Swiss National Team (Timnas) striker Breel Embolo received a visa on Thursday, June 4, 2026, local time, and will depart for the 2026 World Cup, after a two-day delay in his travel authorization to the United States.
“We have just been informed that Breel Embolo’s visa has been approved. Therefore, he will be able to leave for the United States on Friday (June 5, 2026). He is expected to join the team on Friday evening (US time),” the Swiss Football Federation said in a statement on Embolo’s case involving a criminal conviction for an incident in 2018.
The Swiss squad based in San Diego has a warm-up match on Saturday, June 6, 2026, against Australia and starts the 2026 World Cup program a week before playing Qatar in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup group in Santa Clara.
Embolo was denied boarding on the team plane on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from Zurich to Los Angeles because his travel authorization was blocked by the United States (US) authorities, who wanted to verify that the striker’s case did not contain violence.
He was charged after a verbal altercation in the center of Basel City. The verdict was only finalized, after an appeal, in April 2026.
Embolo, 29, will be heading to his third 2026 World Cup as Switzerland’s first-choice striker.
Switzerland are favourites in Group B which will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in Inglewood, California, then Canada in Vancouver on June 24, 2026.
