Indonesia's young badminton talents have once again been given the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities on the international stage. Their performances reflect the sustainable development program implemented by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) with the full support of PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BNI.
The development of a champion mentality, forged through continuous competition experience in various international tournaments, continues to show positive results. This is reflected in the success of two young Indonesian men's singles players, Alwi Farhan Alhasny and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, in advancing to the semifinals of the Australian Badminton Open 2026, held at Quaycentre, Olympic Boulevard, Sydney, Australia.
BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo said that the achievements of Alwi and Ubed demonstrate that Indonesia's young athletes have the ability to compete at the highest level while also reflecting the results of a consistent and structured development process.
“In addition to improvements in technical abilities, experience gained from competing in various international tournaments also plays an important role in building the champion mentality and competitiveness of Indonesia's young athletes,†Okki said in a written statement.
Alwi secured his place in the semifinals after defeating Taiwan's Lee Chia Hao in the quarterfinals. Alwi won in straight games with a score of 21-18, 21-15. The victory also marked an improvement on his performance at last year's Australian Open, where his campaign ended in the quarterfinal stage.
The result extends Alwi's series of appearances in major tournaments, following his participation in the Singapore Open and Indonesia Open.
Meanwhile, Ubed became the second Indonesian representative to secure a semifinal berth after defeating Malaysia's Justin Hoh in the quarterfinals. Delivering a convincing performance, Ubed won in straight games with a score of 21-7, 21-13 in just 38 minutes.
Their journey is not over yet. In the semifinals, Alwi will face Hong Kong's men's singles representative, while Ubed is scheduled to take on China's Dong Tian Yao. If both players are able to overcome their respective opponents, Indonesia has the opportunity to create an all-Indonesian final in the men's singles event at the Australian Open 2026.
“We hope that the experience gained from competing in high-level tournaments such as this will further strengthen the confidence and maturity of Indonesia's young athletes. The regeneration process requires match experience and consistent opportunities to compete at the international level,†Okki emphasized.
Support for young athletes is part of BNI's long-term commitment to fostering the next generation of Indonesian badminton players capable of competing on the global stage.
Through its synergy with PBSI, BNI hopes that more young players will have the opportunity to develop and enrich their international experience. BNI believes this represents a long-term investment in the development of Indonesia's younger generation, which can gradually reinforce Indonesia's position as one of the world's leading badminton powers.
