JAKARTA – The victory over Brentford with a score of 2-1 makes Manchester United on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League next season. However, interim manager Michael Carrick does not want the club to get carried away in the euphoria.
The Red Devils now need just two more points from their remaining four games to mathematically secure a place in next season’s Champions League after missing out on the European showpiece since 2023/2024.
However, Carrick insists he will not get too carried away if the target of Europe is achieved.
“We have given ourselves a great opportunity, we have put ourselves in a good position. It’s a tough league, it’s hard to win.”
“You can see it throughout the league. Getting the number of wins that we have, I think the players have to get a little bit of credit for that.
“The Champions League is one thing, but it’s also not something we should celebrate too much. We want to finish in a high position in the league.”
“We want to compete for the top of the league and try to get more points so that our season doesn’t end when it does,” Carrick said.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s goals against Brentford were scored by Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko. The supporters at Old Trafford chanted “one more year” to Casemiro after his sixth goal of the season, but Carrick insisted there was no chance of a change of heart over his departure from the club at the end of the season.
“It’s pretty clear. From both sides, it’s pretty clear. Maybe the situation and the clarity have helped everything.”
“It means a lot to him and is to be commended for the situation he’s in. He’s given everything and had some big moments for us,” Carrick said.
