JAKARTA – Lamine Yamal beat Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid) to be named the Best Player of LaLiga this season last weekend after helping Barcelona win the league title for the second consecutive time.
The 18-year-old scored 16 goals and provided 12 assists as Barcelona won their 29th league title, ending the season with 94 points, eight points more than second-placed Real Madrid.
Vedat Muriqi (Mallorca), Pablo Fornals (Real Betis), and Nicolas Pepe (Villarreal) were also nominated alongside Yamal and Mbappe, but the Barcelona youngster won the award after a vote among fans, club captains, and an expert panel.
It is the first time that Yamal has won the award, which was won by his Barcelona teammate Raphinha last season.
Yamal’s statistics would probably have been even better if he hadn’t missed several games throughout the season due to a groin and hamstring injury.
In total, he made 28 appearances, missing the last six league games of the season due to a hamstring problem that flared up during a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo in late April 2026.
However, he has been called up to Spain’s squad for the 2026 World Cup – although there are concerns he will miss the tournament.
La Roja coach Luis de la Fuente said he could be fit for the opening match on June 15, 2026 against Cape Verde.
Meanwhile, Mbappe failed to win the award despite ending the year as LaLiga’s top scorer with 25 goals, slightly ahead of the other nominees, Muriqi (Mallorca), who scored 23 goals but could not prevent his team from being relegated.
Pepe (Villarreal) and Fornals (Betis) are also in the running for the league’s best player after helping their respective teams qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Apart from that, Barcelona’s Hansi Flick was named the Best Coach of the Season, while Carlos Espe (Levante) was named the Best Young Player of the Season after scoring 11 goals – including 10 goals in the last 13 games to help his team avoid relegation.
Finally, Arda Guler’s (Real Madrid) goal from the middle of the field against Elche was awarded the Best Goal of the Season. Finally, Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia received the Best Save of the Season award for his extraordinary action to stop his former teammate at Espanyol, Pere Milla.
