JAKARTA – Michael Carrick expects a tough test against Sunderland. The club is always etched in his memory for bringing one of his worst days as a Manchester United player.
It has been 14 years since the excitement of the last day at the Stadium of Light turned into a nightmare when Sergio Aguero’s late goal against QPR saw Manchester City snatch the Premier League title from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
Manchester United are awaiting the final whistle from the Etihad Stadium after completing a 1-0 win at home to Sunderland, whose supporters rejoiced at the visitors’ late frustration as news of a major change emerged.
“Yes, yes, I remember that. I haven’t forgotten it. Obviously it was a unique feeling. It was not during the match, but after the match, we really didn’t know exactly where the ground was at that time.”
“So, we only found out after we walked to the edge of the field and had to face what was thrown at us.”
“It’s gone, you know, but, yeah, it definitely sticks in the memory,” said Carrick, who was part of Manchester United’s midfield at the time.
It is unlikely that such a painful setback will happen on Saturday, May 9, 2026, as the English League title is far beyond Manchester United’s reach and Champions League qualification has been secured with three games remaining.
However, it is unlikely that the Red Devils in third place will loosen their game against Sunderland who want to end their return to the English League with a bang.
“They have a lot to fight for. I think the competition is very tight – between sixth and 12th position it’s probably very, very tight. Three, four points, so I think they still have a lot to fight for.”
“They have had a fantastic season. It is not easy to promote and stay in the league, first and foremost, it has proven difficult in recent times.”
“But to be in the top half and to be within touching distance of Europe as well, it’s a full credit to the season they’ve had,” Carrick said of the Black Cats, who are 12th after exceeding expectations since promotion via the Championship play-offs.
Meanwhile, the lack of injuries has allowed Carrick to largely keep the same team since taking over, but the opportunity to reward those on the bench with playing time is something he is considering.
“I think every player in the squad is absolutely fantastic, I have to admit. Some have played a lot more than others. I understand, from a professional and player point of view, it can be difficult.”
“However, the togetherness and support shown by the players, especially for each other, is a pleasure to watch.”
“That’s what we need in the team and that’s part of the challenge of doing a lot of training and not having as many games as we would like.”
“I think it’s something we really want to play well and still try to get good results as well, but, yes, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on,” he said.
After facing Sunderland, Manchester United will host Nottingham Forest and travel to Brighton as they close out the season.
