Indonesia Qualifies 12 Representatives for the World Badminton Championships

KUALA LUMPUR, FRIDAY – The World Championship in New Delhi, India, from August 17 to 23, will serve as the highest stage of competition for badminton athletes in 2026. According to the list released by the Badminton World Federation, Indonesia has qualified 12 representatives.

The list was announced by BWF on Friday (12/6/2026), consisting of 64 athletes, each in the men’s and women’s singles categories, and 48 pairs in each doubles category.

Among those who qualified based on the world ranking list on April 28, 2026, there are 12 Indonesian representatives from five categories, including those who will be appearing for the first time.

The debutants in this World Championship are Thalita Ramadhani Wiryawan, Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin, Rachel Alessya Rose/Febi Setiangrum, Amri Syahnawi/Nita Violina Marwah, and Adnan Maulana/Indah Cahya Sari Jamil.

Another representative in the doubles event qualified with a different partner from their previous participation, one of them being Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.

Fajar will appear for the sixth time after previously partnering with Muhammad Rian Ardianto in five participations, while Fikri played alongside Bagas Maulana at the 2023 World Championship. Fajar/Rian achieved their best result by reaching the semifinals in Basel 2019 and Tokyo 2022.

In the men’s singles category, Jonatan Christie and Alwi Farhan will face another challenge from France, which has qualified three players.

Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma, who played alongside Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi in the 2025 World Championship in France, will this time compete with Meilysa Trias Puspitasari. Meilysa will be making her debut in the World Championship.

Indonesia’s number of representatives is based on the provisions stipulated in the BWF statutes. A country is entitled to four singles/doubles representatives if they are ranked in the top eight in the world. Three representatives are eligible if they are ranked in the top 24, and two representatives are eligible if they are ranked in the top 150.

The “Merah Putih” squad will compete against the best athletes from each country, including the defending champions in all categories. They are Shi Yu Qi (men’s singles), Akane Yamaguchi (women’s singles), Kim Won-ho/Seo Seung-jae (men’s doubles), Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning (women’s doubles), and Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles).

French Challenge

In the men’s singles category, Jonatan Christie and Alwi Farhan will face another challenge from France, which has qualified three players. They are Christo Popov, Alex Lanier, and Toma Junior Popov.

The trio of men’s singles players from France played a significant role in leading their country to the finals of the Thomas Cup men’s team championship in Denmark in April, including defeating Indonesia in the group stage.

In addition to the 12 representatives who have been declared qualified and confirmed their participation, Indonesia also has athletes on the reserve list in case any athletes withdraw.

The highest position in the reserve list is occupied by the mixed doubles pair, Marwan Faza/Aisyah Salsabila Putri Pranata, who are in second place. This means they can compete if two mixed doubles pairs withdraw.

Other athletes included in the reserve list are Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Rian/Rahmat Hidayat, and Isyana Syahira Meida/Rinjani Kwinara Nastine.

The Indonesian squad has a heavy task to secure the championship title last won by Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan in Basel 2019. The best result in 2025 was achieved by Putri Kusuma Wardani, who reached the semifinals.
