JAKARTA – Jamie Carragher has reignited his feud with Mohamed Salah by calling the soon-to-be departing star selfish for criticising Liverpool’s style of play on social media.
The Egyptian, who will make his final appearance for Liverpool in the season-ending match against Brentford at Anfield this weekend, said the club needed to rediscover its “heavy metal” style of football, which was seen as a criticism of the playing style under Manager Arne Slot.
Carragher, who had previously criticised Salah this season after the forward said he felt betrayed by Liverpool and his relationship with Arne Slot had deteriorated after Liverpool’s draw against Leeds United some time ago, gave his assessment of Salah’s latest comments to Sky Sports.
“I’m not surprised. I’ve been telling everyone, there will be something else happening before the end of the season. He will make another shocking statement, a little similar to what Ronaldo did when he left Manchester United.”
“I thought it might happen after the end of the season when he moved on, but it didn’t. Less than two years ago, I called him selfish for doing the interview and I guess it still applies.”
“Liverpool have a very important week. They are still not fully qualified for the Champions League and the focus should be on Liverpool FC, not Salah FC.”
“It’s very important for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League, but I’m not surprised. This is not a good thing at all,” said Carragher.
Salah’s post came after Liverpool suffered a 2-4 defeat at home to Aston Villa which left them in fifth place in the English League table and added pressure on Arne Slot’s position as manager.
“This season’s defeat is very painful and not what our supporters deserve. I want to see Liverpool return to being a ‘heavy metal’ attacking team that opponents fear and return to being a team that wins trophies.”
“That’s the football I know how to play and that’s the identity that needs to be restored and maintained forever.”
“This is not negotiable and everyone who joins this club has to adapt to it,” Salah said in a post on X.
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says he thinks Arne Slot should have left Salah out of his team for the final game of his career at Liverpool’s home this weekend as a result of his comments.
