JAKARTA – Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended the Champions League title. Coach Luis Enrique also set a record when he led PSG to win a penalty shootout 4-3 (1-1) over Arsenal in the final at the Puskas Arena Stadium, Budapest, Saturday, May 30, 2026 WIB. He said that PSG deserved to win.

Yes, PSG deserves to be champions. Even though Kai Havertz’s early goal was missed, with the advantage of ball possession and dominating the game, PSG was finally able to break the deadlock through a dead ball. Ousmane Dembele’s penalty execution in the second half managed to equalize the score to 1-1.

Arsenal who chose to defend after leading 1-0 did not change their strategy because they were able to make Dembele and Desire Doue frustrated. Mikel Arteta’s team’s efforts did succeed in not conceding for the second time, forcing extra time and then a penalty shootout. Arteta hopes his team will be able to overcome the pressure during the penalty shootout.

Only Arteta’s hope was not fulfilled. Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes who looked unsure when executing also failed. Meanwhile, four PSG kickers were able to carry out their duties. Nuno Mendes himself failed so that PSG lifted the trophy with wide ears.

Instead, Arsenal had to give up on winning the Champions League trophy for the first time in the club’s history. Arsenal actually made it to the final in 2006. However, they had to admit Barcelona’s 2-1 advantage.

When Gabriel failed to complete the task, the PSG player celebrated the victory by hugging goalkeeper Matvei Safonov who replaced Lucas Chevalier. Meanwhile, Enrique celebrated with his assistants.

“We deserved to win,” Enrique said after the match as quoted by the UEFA website. “But both teams really deserve to win. It’s just that when you look at how we’ve performed throughout the season, we are the ones who deserve it more,” he said again.

“It must be admitted that they started the match very well. They also know how to defend well. To be honest, it’s very difficult to get through. We tried in every way to attack. But they are really strong physically. This makes the match really hard,” said the former Barcelona and Spain national team coach.

The success of bringing PSG to the championship for the second time in a row makes Enrique a record. He is not only the first coach to make Les Parisiens champions of the Champions League but also back-to-back champions.

Enrique is also the second coach from Spain to successfully lead the team to retain the Champions League title after Jose Villalonga. He led Real Madrid to back-to-back championships in 1956 and 1957.

Enrique is also listed as a coach who has lifted the trophy three times at two different clubs. He did it in 2015 when he led Barca to victory. Currently, only Carlo Ancelotti has won five times with AC Milan and Madrid.

However, Enrique will never match Ancelotti’s record of winning the Champions League both as a player and a coach. The figure who once managed AS Roma never lifted the trophy despite having defended two La Liga giants, Madrid and Barca.

Meanwhile, midfielder Vitinha, who was chosen as Player of the Match, said that the success of the champions made PSG the best European team.

“This final match, in my opinion, is the most important throughout this season. The players are also ready to face it. The success of being champions for the second time in a row is certainly a very beautiful dream. I’m proud and everyone is proud,” said Vitinha.

“We also proved to be the best team in Europe. Paris is certainly proud. So is our family,” he said again. Vitinha was also a starter in the 2025 final when PSG slaughtered Inter Milan 5-0.
