JAKARTA – Liverpool has reached an agreement to appoint Andoni Iraola as the new head coach.
According to ESPN reports, Iraola is expected to be officially confirmed as Liverpool boss this weekend after positive discussions with the Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes, who also appointed Iraola at AFC Bournemouth in 2023.
Liverpool management is targeting a more aggressive and attacking style of football after the departure of Arne Slot, who was fired on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Iraola quickly became the main candidate to replace the Dutch coach based on his impressive performance at Bournemouth, which he led to finish in sixth place in the 2025/2026 season.
It is reported that Iraola will sign a two-year contract, which is in line with his preference throughout his coaching career to sign short-term contracts.
There has been speculation that Liverpool will turn to the former player to be part of the coaching staff next season, but no such approach has been made.
Iraola has also recently received support from Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
“I think he has done a tremendous job at Bournemouth. I think his style of management would suit Liverpool.”
“However, let’s be honest. Liverpool is an attractive job for many elite managers around the world. So, I think he is not the only name that will be considered.”
“Because of his association with Bournemouth and people who have come from Bournemouth to Liverpool at board level, they will know him very well.”
“However, there are also other names out there who I’m sure will want the job at Liverpool. It’s a big job in football. I think he should be in the running, yes,” Gerrard told TNT Sports.
Arne Slot was sacked from his position after two seasons leading at Anfield. The former Feyenoord coach led the Reds to the English League title in his first season at Liverpool in 2024/2025, but failed to repeat that success the following season, with the Reds finishing in fifth place.
