FIFA has canceled 2026 World Cup tickets issued to about 60 fans who mistakenly got them for free due to a system error on the website.
The ticket was allocated at no cost (0 US dollars) due to a previous payment issue during the checkout process.
“FIFA regrets the error and the inconvenience it has caused. The tickets requested by the fans are still booked and the fans affected have been invited to complete the payment with the correct amount,” FIFA said in a statement.
It is the latest misstep in the often-controversial 2026 World Cup ticketing program, which is under investigation by the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey for possible violations of consumer protection laws.
FIFA in an email message to buyers said the tickets with the wrong price were sold through the official 2026 World Cup website on May 21, 2026.
The date for the sale of tickets is more than three months after FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that all 104 matches of the 2026 World Cup had sold out.
In fact, tickets are still being sold by FIFA for the 2026 World Cup matches that will open next week in Mexico City.
It is not yet clear whether ticket prices for less popular matches will fall below FIFA’s controversial surge pricing model.
FIFA also operates its own resale platform – and takes a 15 percent commission from buyers and sellers – to remove ticket middlemen from the market.
However, sales platforms such as Seat Geek offer extensive availability on Friday, June 5, 2026, for many matches.
Tickets for the 2026 World Cup are much more expensive than previous editions, which FIFA justified as an effort to generate billions of dollars that would be given to member federations to develop football globally.
FIFA took over control of pricing and ticket sales as part of an effort to manage World Cup operations internally. The old model in previous editions was to work with the local organizing committee of the host country.
In fact, when the United States, Canada, and Mexico Soccer Federation won the right to host in 2018, they promised to sell hundreds of thousands of tickets for $21 (about Rp380 thousand) for the group stage matches.
