Emiliano Martinez has told Argentina fans he will recover from a finger injury in time for the Tango Team’s opening match at the 2026 World Cup against Algeria on June 16, 2026.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper suffered a small fracture in the ring finger of his right hand during the warm-up before the Europa League final, in which The Villans beat Freiburg 3-0 and were crowned champions.

The veteran goalkeeper has been training separately from the squad at Argentina’s base in Kansas City and told fans as he got off the bus on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, local time.

“I will arrive,” Martinez said.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has just completed a strong season with Aston Villa, who also finished fourth in the English League standings in the 2025/2026 season. He was also included in the Best Team of the Europa League this season.

As the winner of the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, Martinez was chosen as the best goalkeeper at the tournament. He was also awarded the Golden Glove for helping his country win the 2024 Copa America.

Meanwhile, Argentina begin their bid to defend their title against Algeria in Kansas City before facing Austria on June 22, 2026 and Jordan on June 27, 2026, with the final two games in Arlington, Texas.
