The expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup officially commenced on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City as the home country faced South Africa in the opening match of the historic tournament.
Co-hosts Mexico, Canada, and the United States will stage a record 104 matches across 16 stadiums over a 39-day period. El Pais reported that Mexico will host 13 matches, Canada will host 13 matches, and the United States will hold 78 matches.
The venue, commercially rebranded under a 2,100 million pesos investment as Estadio Azteca Banorte, became the first stadium in history to host matches for three separate World Cups. Organizers estimated that five million visitors would arrive across the three host countries, with FIFA projecting a total attendance of 7 million spectators in stadiums and 6 billion viewers worldwide.
