Cape Verde shocked the world again with a thrilling point in Miami that leaves Uruguay in World Cup trouble.

Fresh from holding Spain to a memorable draw last week, the new boys scored their first World Cup goal in history when Kevin Pina ripped home a 35-yard free-kick.

Uruguay were stunned but equalised when Maxi Araujo headed in to finally break the resistance of Cape Verde.

And Agustin Canobbio turned the game on its head in first-half stoppage time when he steered in a cushioned header across from Araujo.

But the debutants were not done and fought back to level when Helio Varela capitalised on a mix-up at the back and fired into an open goal.

Uruguay, who face Spain in their final game, and Cape Verde have two points from two games.

After Spain thumped Saudi Arabia to move into the driving seat the final round of games are going to be crucial.

Cape Verde's goalkeeper Vozinha excelled against Spain and was in fine form again, while at the other end an error from Uruguay's Fernando Muslera proved key.

Muslera and Vozinha were the first pair of 40-year-old players to appear in the same World Cup match.

And if Muslera could have done better with Cape Verde's long-range opener he was all at sea for their second.

Mathias Olivera sliced a backpass, Muslera was out of position and Varela did brilliantly to knee the ball past him and finish with style.

Pina's early strike was the longest-range goal of the World Cup so far and the first free-kick scored by an African nation in the tournament since Kalu Uche netted for Nigeria against Greece in 2010.

At 2-2, Jamiro Monteiro rippled the roof of the net from range for Cape Verde who always carried a threat on the break.

Uruguay then bundled the ball in after a real scramble but the flag was raised.

Uruguay had several late sights of goal but could not find a winner and Cape Verde now have a real chance of progressing with a result against Saudi Arabia in their final group game.
