WANA (May 30) – U.S. military actions against Iran under the Trump administration have cost American consumers at least $59 billion in inflated fuel costs, effectively wiping out the average tax refund for families this year, according to a newly released economic report.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, estimated that the spike in energy prices has cost the average American household roughly $450. The financial burden is driven primarily by surging gasoline prices, followed by diesel costs and higher airline ticket prices resulting from increased jet fuel expenses.

Zandi warned that if the conflict does not end soon, American consumers will have no choice but to pull back on spending, noting that the financial strain threatens an already weakened domestic economy.

Goldman Sachs echoed these concerns in a parallel report, predicting that inflation-driven headwinds will likely suppress consumer spending growth for the remainder of the year.

Despite growing public concern, Donald Trump has repeatedly dismissed anxieties over rising energy costs. According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average price for regular unleaded gasoline hit $4.39 per gallon on Friday—a near 40% surge from $3.17 per gallon during the same period last year.

Speaking less than a week after launching military operations against Iran on February 28, Trump minimized the economic fallout. He claimed that prices would come down very quickly once the crisis ended, adding that any potential price hikes were acceptable because the conflict itself was far more important than a minor increase in gasoline prices.
