Manchester City midfielder Rodri says he will wait until after the 2026 World Cup to discuss his future, after being linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer.
Rodri’s contract at the English club is due to expire in 2027. The Ballon d’Or winner has been named by Real Madrid’s presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme as a potential target ahead of this weekend’s presidential election against Florentino Perez.
Rodri is now focused on the Spanish National Team (National Team). He joined since Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the training camp in Las Rozas, Madrid. When speaking to reporters on Monday, June 1, 2026, he was reluctant to reveal his plans.
“We’re here to talk about the 2026 World Cup. Regarding my future, I’ll wait until the 2026 World Cup is over,” said Rodri.
Real Madrid want to strengthen their team after a second consecutive season without a major trophy.
Speaking to ESPN last week, Riquelme said Rodri – who played for Villarreal and Atletico Madrid before joining Manchester City in 2019 – was the type of player who should play for Real Madrid.
“That’s normal, it’s part of football, players’ names are associated with certain clubs. I’m focused, I’m captain of the Spanish national team.”
“My responsibility is to accept it. I am a leader in the team, my only task is to help Spain win the 2026 World Cup.”
“I’m not going to waste time on all that. After the 2026 World Cup, we’ll just see,” said Rodri.
Rodri has been battling with injuries since suffering a ligament tear in September 2024, but managed to regain his place at Manchester City during the 2025/2026 season, with 21 appearances in the English League.
“I’m very happy and excited. I was just joking that this is the first time I’ve come in fresh and without many matches.”
“I was able to overcome everything. I came with less rhythm, but with fewer matches,” he said.
