Florentino Perez insists Real Madrid only need a good coach to return to their best form. He added that Jose Mourinho is in that category.
Real Madrid have now gone two seasons in a row without winning a major trophy, with three coaches – Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa – failing to maximise the potential of the squad.
“(Kylian) Mbappe, Vinicius (Junior), (Jude) Bellingham, (Arda) Guler, (Federico) Valverde, (Aurelien) Tchouameni. They are the best in the world.”
“A good coach, with all these players, will make them part of another very important era in the history of Real Madrid,” Perez said in an interview with Spanish national broadcaster TVE.
Perez added, when asked about Mourinho – who last managed at the Bernabeu between 2010 and 2013 – that he was clearly a good coach.
So far, it is only Mourinho who has been heavily linked with Real Madrid. However, Real Madrid will hold a presidential election this weekend.
If Perez returns as President of Los Blancos, it is not impossible that Mourinho will return to the Bernabeu.
If Perez’s challenger, Enrique Riquelme, wins the presidential election – the club’s first since 2006 – he will of course have another candidate.
In an interview with ESPN last week, Riquelme promised to give specific names regarding new coaches and players. Recently, only Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who has been named as Requelme’s target.
However, despite the selection of new coaches and players, Real Madrid actually has a serious and urgent issue that must be resolved by whoever is its president.
The issue in question is the future of Vinicius Junior, whose current contract expires in 2027.
“I don’t know if he will renew his contract. If you ask me, I want him to stay,” Perez told TVE.
Meanwhile, Perez criticized Riquelme, saying that the board he proposed included figures from the presidency of Ramon Calderon – describing it as the worst period in Real Madrid’s history – who led the club from 2006 to 2009, before Perez’s return.
“I’m not going to argue with anyone. He can talk as much as he wants. I’ll explain everything here,” Perez said when asked if he would face Riquelme in a public forum ahead of the vote.
