JAKARTA – Indonesia only has two representatives who managed to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 Malaysia Masters. Both representatives are in the men’s singles.
The Malaysia Masters 2026, which took place at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, completed the second round of matches on Thursday, May 21, 2026, afternoon WIB. Of the seven Indonesian representatives who fought, five of them had to pack their bags.
Badminton player Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah is one of the two representatives who are still in the BWF Super 500 tournament. He secured a ticket after defeating Jeon Hyeok-jin (South Korea) in a three-game match 21-10, 16-21, and 21-16.
This victory also avenged Ubed’s defeat in their first competitive clash last week in the second round of the 2026 Thailand Open. At that time, the badminton player from Madura picked up his suitcase after going through a two-game match.
“Last week I was still a little surprised by the opponent’s playing pattern and couldn’t get out of the pressure. So, in this latest match I tried to analyze from the opponent’s game video and what I learned I was able to apply,” Ubed said in a statement.
Ubed will face a tough test in the quarterfinal as he has to face the third seed Christo Popov. The French men’s singles qualified by eliminating Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.
Ubed admitted that he wanted to focus more on preparing for the mental battle against an opponent known to be tenacious in long rallies.
“I will fight Christo Popov, I want to prepare his mindset first because the opponent is not easy to shut down and wants to play nothing to lose,” said Ubed.
Another Indonesian representative in the quarterfinals is Jonatan Christie. Jonatan first advanced to the quarterfinals this morning after defeating the Chinese Taipei representative, Wang Po Wei, with a score of 21-16, 19-21, and 21-13.
The 2018 Asian Games gold medallist will then face China’s Hu Zhe An, who defeated French player Alex Lanier with a score of 15-21, 21-16, and 21-15.
The other four representatives who were eliminated following Ginting were Amri Syahanawi/Nita Violina Marwah, Adnan Maulana/Indah Cahya Sari Jamil, Bobby Setiabudi/Melati Daeva Oktavianti, and Lanny Tria Mayasari/Apriyani Rahayu.
