JAKARTA – Santos denied reports that there was a lack of transparency from their medical staff regarding Neymar’s physical condition and believes the player will be ready to play at the 2026 World Cup.

The 34-year-old striker joined the Brazilian training camp on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, local time. Soon after, he underwent tests that revealed a grade 2 muscle injury in his right calf that would keep him out for at least two weeks.

Neymar, who is in doubt for the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Morocco on June 13, suffered an injury in Santos’ defeat to Coritiba on May 17, one day before Carlo Ancelotti announced Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Santos diagnosed Neymar with edema which caused swelling in his calf, but they believe the player will recover this week.

Santos said in a statement at the weekend that it had shared all the results of the medical tests carried out on Neymar with the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) until May 18, 2026.

“The two-week period starts on May 17 (May) and ends this Sunday (May 31), at which point the player should be fit to return to training.”

“It must always be remembered that these estimates vary from person to person and depend on the needs of the team and the importance of the match.”

“The Brazilian National Team (National Team) physiotherapy team and the professionals from Santos FC have worked with Neymar for more than 10 years and throughout this recovery process.”

“The club’s medical department is in line and approves the treatment schedule set by the CBF medical team. The professionals at Santos FC know the recovery capacity of the players and are confident that Neymar will be ready to play in the 2026 World Cup,” said Santos.

Neymar missed the warm-up friendly against Panama in Brasília on Monday, June 1, 2026, early in the morning WIB. He also has not returned when Brazil plays Egypt in Cleveland on June 7, 2026 morning WIB.

Captain Santos will race against time to recover and be ready to play in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Morocco at the MetLife Stadium on June 13, 2026.

Neymar, who is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, has not played for the Samba Team since suffering an ACL injury in October 2023 while defending his country.

He is among the final 26-man list for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, marking his fourth appearance at the World Cup.

FIFA rules allow players from the World Cup squad to be replaced up to one day before the team’s first match at the tournament.
