Florentino Perez says he will announce Real Madrid’s first major signing for next season on Thursday, June 4, local time, as the club’s presidential election campaign enters its final days.
Club members will vote on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in the first contested election at Real Madrid in 20 years, choosing between incumbent Perez (79) and entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme (37).
ESPN reported on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, local time, that Real Madrid was close to reaching an agreement with defender Ibrahima Konate, who had left Liverpool and was now a free agent.
Riquelme said this week that club legend Raul Gonzalez would be sporting director if he won Sunday’s vote. Meanwhile, he also said Manchester City midfielder Rodri is the type of player who should play for Real Madrid.
“This Thursday (local time) I will announce my first major recruitment for next season. Everyone knows my sports project, which is to have the best players, and continue to win,” Perez said in an interview with the newspaper El Espanyol.
Perez did not confirm reports that Jose Mourinho had agreed to return to Real Madrid as coach, having previously led between 2010 and 2013.
“Soon I will announce who the new coach of Real Madrid is. We will have more names before Sunday, don’t worry,” said Perez.
Perez led Real Madrid between 2000 and 2006. He then led again from 2009 to the present, after being elected unopposed in the club’s last five election cycles.
Meanwhile, Riquelme criticized Perez’s plan to sell a five percent stake in Real Madrid – which has always been a sports club, owned by its members, not a limited company – to external investors.
“With me, Real Madrid will always belong to its members. I want the members to be the owners of the financial wealth (of the club).”
“Right now we are just owners of emotional wealth. I want to strengthen that bond and for that bond to continue after death so that financial wealth can be passed on to your children or family.”
“We will see how to do it, we will discuss it and it will be decided in a referendum of all members,” Perez said last week.
