JAKARTA – Swiss National Team (Timnas) striker Breel Embolo applied for an emergency visa at the United States Embassy in Bern on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, local time, a day after he was denied boarding the team plane to the Uncle Sam’s country for the 2026 World Cup in preparation for a criminal sentence.
The Swiss Football Federation at the team’s training camp in San Diego confirmed the reason why Embolo’s travel approval to the United States was reviewed on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. He has a binding sentence this year.
Embolo was charged after a fight in the center of Basel in 2018 and his guilty verdict was upheld on appeal in September 2025. The verdict was finalized in April 2026, just weeks before Embolo was scheduled to depart for the United States for his third World Cup in his career.
“The embassy investigation specifically focuses on whether there was physical violence involved. This did not happen. Breel and the team are now waiting for approval so that he can leave for San Diego and join the squad as soon as possible,” said the Swiss Football Federation.
Switzerland begins its 2026 World Cup campaign on June 13, 2026 against Qatar at the San Francisco 49ers Stadium, Santa Clara.
They will then play against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Inglewood, California, and complete Group B against tournament hosts Canada in Vancouver on June 24, 2026.
Embolo, 29, is expected to be Switzerland’s first-choice striker and has scored 24 goals in 86 international matches.
