Real Madrid will have to pay Benfica 15 million euros to sign Jose Mourinho as coach if Florentino Perez is re-elected as President of Los Blancos.
This comes a day after Perez’s election campaign confirmed that Mourinho – who previously led Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 – is Perez’s preferred coach for next season as the club seeks to bounce back after two consecutive seasons without a major trophy.
In a statement released to Portuguese financial regulators, Benfica said it had officially learned of Perez’s desire to bring Mourinho back for a second term at the Bernabeu.
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica announces that, as part of his campaign for the presidency of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez has expressed his firm intention to appoint Jose Mario dos Santos Mourinho Felix as manager if he wins the presidential election of the club, scheduled for June 7, 2026.”
“If this scenario occurs, the appointment will be made at a cost of 15,000,000 euros, in accordance with the termination clause in the current sports employment contract,” said Benfica in a statement shared with Portugal’s financial regulator, CMVM.
Mourinho, 63, has a contract with Benfica until June 2027. If Los Blancos really want to sign him this summer then there is a price to pay according to the contract clause.
Meanwhile, Perez faces competition from businessman Enrique Riquelme in Sunday’s election, which will see Real Madrid members vote between the two candidates for the first time since 2006.
Riquelme has not named his preferred coach, but said club legend Raul Gonzalez would be Director of Football and Fernando Hierro as Director of Real Madrid’s Academy, while promising to sign Erling Haaland and Rodri from Manchester City.
