A.J. Terrell, Xavier Watts, and Jessie Bates were vital pieces of the secondary, James Pearce Jr.'s sack total turned heads, and Brandon Dorlus and Zach Harrison flourished. The most critical defensive player, however, was probably Kaden Elliss.

Elliss had to wear that hat among his many chapeaus over the past three seasons. With three different defensive coordinators, very different supporting casts, and a thousand problems to paper over, Elliss played the role of a third down coverage option, an early down thumper, a high-end pass rushing presence, and a dozen other situational roles. The jack of all trades ability made him incredibly valuable for Ryan Nielsen, Jimmy Lake, and Jeff Ulbrich, and his departure for the hated Saints opened up a major need in the defense.

Enter Jalon Walker. He may play off the edge more often than Elliss, but Walker's going to be asked to handle increased roles and responsibilities in year two. His coverage ability is a real calling card, his run defense was already strong in his rookie season, and we've just scratched the surface of what Walker can offer as a pass rusher. The sheer athletic ability, smarts, and versatility that Walker brings to the table makes him the natural choice to take on Elliss' mantle as the linchpin of this Falcons defense, even if their roles are ultimately not quite the same.

Daniel Flick at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote about this last week, and I think it's an insightful look at what Ulbrich means when he says that Walker will fit into a role similar to Ellis's. In 2025, Elliss achieved career highs in snaps lined up on the edge (279), working against receivers in the slot (69), and rushing the passer more generally (175). The Falcons are going to want Walker chasing quarterbacks more often than that, but he's got the toolkit to be a much better player than Elliss in coverage, which unlocks some interesting looks for Ulbrich if he was willing to put Elliss at nickel at times in heavier looks. He's also already a strong run defender and a layer who has drawn a lot of praise both for his varied skill set and how quickly he picks up what the coaching staff needs, so Walker may well end up moving around even more than Elliss did.

What's readily evident is that Walker is the guy the Falcons expect to step in and elevate the defense. They're going to ask him to be a terrific pass rusher, an asset in coverage and against the run from multiple spots, and to plug in where there might be weaknesses or needs on a weekly basis. Elliss, who played all 51 possible games in his three seasons in Atlanta, was often asked to paper over weaknesses in the linebacker corps and elsewhere, and to sow chaos from wherever he happened to be lined up. Walker, who was good as a rookie despite injuries in 2025 and just turned 22 in February, is the team's best candidate for a similar level of responsibility and a player with the upside to be even better than Elliss over the long haul.

Replacing Elliss isn't a one man job, but Walker will be asked to do most of the job in spirit, if not specifics. If he can grow into that role and be the caliber of player the Falcons envision he can be, this defense has the chance to surprise yet again in 2026.
